William Shakespeare

윌리엄 세익스피어는 가장 유명한 영국의 극작가로 알려져 있다.

그의 작품은 400년 전에 쓰여진 것이지만 아직도 그의 연극에 나오는 대사들이 일상생활 영어에 쓰여지고 있다.

 

지난 번에 이어 미진한 부분을 다시 첨가해 보았다.

 

 

All’s well that ends well :  Not everything goes smoothly in life, but as long as the ending is a good one that is all right.

When we were about to go on holiday, we found the front tyre had a puncture, then a friend of mine was sick during the journey, and finally we had to take a long detour because of an accident.

But at last we reached our destination and had a wonderful holiday.

All’s well that ends well.

 

(우리가 휴가를 떠나려고 했을 때 차의 앞바퀴가 바람이 빠져 있었다. 또한 여행 중에는 내 친구가 아팠으며 사고 때문에 먼 길로 우회하는 사태까지 벌어졌다. 하지만 결국 목적지에 도달했고 멋진 휴가를 보냈었다. 끝이 좋으면 만사형통)

A tower of strength : 막대한 지원

(그녀는 직장에서 매우 힘든 시간을 보내고 있지만 그녀의 남편이 막대한 지원자로 남아있다.)

After the boy broke his mother’s favourite vase, he decided it would be better to lie low for a while.

(그녀의 보석은 광선에 비쳐 번쩍거리지만 실은 인조보석이다. 번쩍거린다고 다 보석은 아니다)


Green-eyed monster : jealousy

Their friendship was ruined by the green-eyed monster. He wanted to know about everyone she spoke to and everything she did every minute of the day.

 

(우정은 질투로 인해 금이갔다. 그는 그녀가 만나 얘기하는 모든 이들과 매일 무엇을 하는 지, 그리고 매일 어느 순간에 무엇을 하는 지 알기를 원했다.)

 

 

 

 

A fool’s paradise

She’s living in a fool’s paradise if she thinks he is going to divorce his wife and marry her. He has no intention of leaving his wife.

 

(만약 그녀가 생각하기를 그가 부인과 이혼하고 그녀와 결혼할 것이라고 생각한다면 그것은 헛된 희망이다. 그는 그의 부인과 헤어질 의사가 전혀 없다.)
